My name is Liu Tingming. I am studying in Anlong No. 1 Middle School, which is located in Guizhou province.

I am in Guizhou

My family has lived in rural areas for generations. Agriculture is the main source of our family income. My family and I are living at Anlong county, Guizhou province. There are five people in my family. But now I am living all by myself. My father passed away early from illness. My mother is suffering from years of farming.

Now she no longer works in the field. Instead she found a job away from home I have 3 sisters. Two of them got married while the other took out student loans to complete university courses. We live in a cottage with cracks in the wall. Our village is rather small, consists of about 30 households. Now I am in my final year of high school. Due to time constraints, I rarely go home. If I am feeling homesick, I will just cycle 5km all the way back home.

In my high school, each student is charged a fee of 3350 Yuan, including tuition fees and boarding & lodging fees for each academic year of study. Your sponsorship has greatly helped in taking some of the burden off my mother’s shoulders.

Now I am in my senior year of high school. I have always wanted to go into medicine, clinical medicine especially. My ideal university is Chongqing Military Medical University. I prefer Biology and Chemistry over English. I find English so difficult and I always score badly. In contrast, I get a better grade in Chemistry. However, my mock results are still very far away from my target score, I must continue to strive towards my goals. I once thought that perhaps Normal University suits me more than Medical University. Anyhow when applying for admission to a university, medicine remains my top priority. I am determined to become a doctor regardless of any circumstances.

During summer vacation, I will be looking for jobs to earn extra income. Working in a construction site with my uncle is also an option. During school days, I don’t have to worry about regular meals as school will provide. When I return home for holidays, I will buy some cabbage and instant noodles before going home. When the Gaokao results release and I am admitted to my first choice major, I will try hard persistently to go through medical school and later pursue a career in medicine.

I am writing this letter to express my sincerest thanks to you for financing my studies. Because of your help, I manage to complete high school. So far I have received a total of 11000 Yuan from you. I wish you good health and everything goes well with your work.

Life Stories

Huang Fumei

"I like reading. My primary school teacher used to say that knowledge can change one's destiny. So born to a poor family, I hope that, through my own efforts, I can get admitted to the university and find a good job afterwards, and thus change my destiny and resolve family difficulties.“

I have a big family with my elderly grandparents, my father and mother, two younger sisters and a younger brother. Grandpa is 71 years old and too senile to do manual work. His job now is to take care of the grandchildren and keep the house. Grandma is 70 years old. She often suffers dizziness due to high blood pressure, which she always has to take medicine to control. We would feel relieved as long as she can take care of herself.

One of my younger sisters is a high school freshman this year and she's a quite good student. Both of us are in high school now and high school costs. Tuition, books, and living expenses all need money. My little brother and the other little sister are in the sixth grade of primary school. Tuition and books are free at that level because the government pays for them. However, we all need to pay for our living expenses, learning materials, and stationery.
